SPED Schools in the Philippines
Posted by admin on June 3rd, 2008 filed in Autism in the PhilippinesEver since Carlo was a small kid, we’ve already noticed that he is really interested with flags. I remember during the centennial celebration ten years ago, he would smile every time we pass by the flag vendors. Since he can’t really say what he really wants, he ended up pointing at the flags and he would look at us. In the end, Carlo gets his favorite flag – the current Philippine Flag.
Since then, it has been his routine to buy a small Philippine Flag that he can put up as a display on our dining room. We even had a centennial collectible way back that my father got from the radio station where he works and he sort of collected the items for Carlo as he would smile every time he looks at it even at the tender age of three!
Two years ago, I caught him drawing something on a paper. He drew the Philippine Flag and he started applying the necessary colors to make a simple yet special flag.
Carlo just turned eleven years old when the photo was taken. Apparently, they had an activity in school that’s why he was enthusiastic in making his own flags and even used the stick from the walis tambo as the support.
Anyway, I am writing this entry not only to share my brother’s interest in flags, but I would also like to share my thoughts on the present condition of the schools for special children here in the Philippines.
As we all know, the population of the Philippines is increasing every year. It also means that there is an increase of special children with special needs like those who have celebral pulsy, mental retardation, ADHD and autism. A lot of teaching techniques have been introduced and are being used in SPED schools, but I saw one problem here.
I remember the first time my brother was enrolled in pre-school. He was first enrolled in a normal school for little kids hoping that he would socialize with them. Unfortunately, our dear Carlo would rather play by himself in one corner as the teacher concentrates on the other kids. We had no choice that time since we don’t really know any SPED schools in Pangasinan.. until we found one a month after.
We then transferred him in a new school. This time, he had other classmates with special condition. There’s a variety of them. Luckily, all the teachers who handled Carlo were really nice. When I asked my mom how much they pay for my brother’s schooling, I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount. It is somewhat bigger than my tuition fee and if not mistaken, it’s times two times bigger.
I would usually drop by the school to check him out especially when his nanny is not there. I was able to meet some of the parents and nannies of other SPED students. You can really hear different stories: There is this one kid with mental retardation who is very much loved by her grandmother and her nanny. I never saw her parents come. There is also a kid who suffered from Celebral Pulsy. She is the eldest among three siblings and had successful parents. She kid passed away a few years ago. There is a young, handsome teen who I think is fifteen years old. I can say that the kid is lucky to have a patient yaya since his parents are not really looking after him. Thank God the families of these kids have can afford to send them to a special school.
But there is this one kid who is a year younger than my brother. He was thin, dark yet he is never fails to attend his class.
I was able to meet the parents of the kid. The father works as a messenger and has part-time jobs and the mother is a labandera. They have another son who is not going to school since they can’t afford sending two kids to school at the same time. The normal brother once told his parents that he is willing to sacrifice for one year just to give way to his brother who has special needs. Ate Virgie (Carlo’s nanny) would bring some extra food for the kid and they usually go to the park on Saturdays and Sundays.
After five years of staying in the school, we decided to enroll Carlo in another school who really focuses on Special Children. They offer one-on-one and offer therapy courses and as expected, the payment for his classes increased. I was able to contribute money from the salary I got from my first ever part-time job which was very fulfilling on my part.
As you can see, the education of special children here in the Philippines is really expensive. Before a child is enrolled, they still need to observe, assess and evaluate him as each kid has different needs. In Carlo’s case, he needs some special, occupational and therapy classes. He would only go to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and once he won’t get dressed for school by 1pm on his school day, he would throw some tantrums to express his disappointment.
A year after my father died, my mom decided to apply for a job in England. It is the only way we can earn more money for our family and at the same time residing in a country like England have a lot of benefits particularly for special children Carlo.
Presently, my brother is studying in a public school for special children somewhere in England. The government supports the tuition fee and the transportation of my brother to school. Isn’t that great? Also, he improves a lot specifically in his social skills in a short span of three months.
The main question is : What if the parents of the special child in the Philippines do not have enough money to send their kids to school?
The usual answer: Consult a Public School
Today, we usually hear news reports about the shortage of books, school supplies, classrooms and the like in public schools. What more for public SPED classes? I can imagine a worse scenario.
Another sad reality about this issue is that the kids are not really taking up lessons at all. All the teachers instruct them to do is play, sleep and eat.
I know a number of parents who would enroll their kids to normal schools despite the fact that they know that their child has special needs. Ok, you enrolled him in a reputable school and the administration gladly accepted him. Do you think he will do just fine? Do you think he can meddle easily with his classmates? Do you think he’s happy staying inside the room with all the little bullies? The answer is NO.
I am not writing this entry to make the parents of special children feel bad or to discourage you to enroll your kid in a public SPED school. I am writing this to make an appeal to the concerned individuals to also focus on SPED. The increase of children with special needs is alarmingly increasing. They have the right to education and a right to live a normal life. Parents do want the best for their children so please, work on the program that are best for these kids and follow them correctly. There may not be any cure available for their conditions now, but they can possibly improve for the better.

So sad that third world countries like us have to suffer the consequences of poverty. Those that need more attention are the ones usually deprived of the budget.
I hope this would start a move from those concerned.

Mica, in our country, parents struggle to find educational, prevocational and vocational opportunities for children with special needs. We have no government subsidies to rely on, nor expectations of any help from private or public sectors; in short, everything that a special needs child (those with autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, Down’s, et. al.) must have must come from our own pockets. It’s a sad state, really, and when I think about my family, I am doubly thankful we are still able to provide for our son’s needs. Carlo is lucky to have such opportunities. Let us pray that someday, Filipino kids receive the help they need.

i do believe there’s a holistic lack in practice in the Philippines with regards to special children. However, there are efforts to close the distance between incompetence and actual appropriateness. I just recently attended a seminar with speech pathologists in UP Manila – one aspect special children need desperate help in and that teachers often shun, and they are making efforts to nullify the donwhill trend in most special schools.

Hi Mica, Thanks for this. I admire your great love for your brother. I also have a son with ADHD and I share many of your views in this post. In fact, my family has to deal with many of the issues you raised. I am glad that our struggles are beginning to be expressed openly. I do invite you to visit my website http://brainchildunveiled.blogspot.com/ to read some of my posts on coping with ADHD.

yes, it is true that finding a school for special kids is ver hard. I know, because my son was diagnosed with ADHD and believe me, everything in his education is a plus plus. I also tried enrolling him to a regular schools hoping for him to socialize well but unfortunately some of them have gave up and the others just dont have the capacity to handle them even if their tuition fee for special kids is higher.
Several time i felt the disappoinments and the struggles, hoping for my son to get a good education just like all the ordinary kids out their. I am hoping that our government will put special attention for this matter. it is so sad that only the financially abled family can have better education for their special child.

autistic kids usually get therapies in order for them to cope and be self independent. it is different from a regular school where you learn the 3 R’s. autistic kids specially the severe ones are taught how to clean themselves, eat properly, tidy up the room, have physical exercises and other similar tasks in order to survive, it is not about academics but about simple ways to cope up which is suitable according to their severity.

may i know what SPED schools in the Philippines that Carlo went into? would also like to know how much are the school fees. am looking for a SPED school where i could enroll my son 1 or two years from now. His name is Clarence. He’s been diagnosed with CP. He’s 5y/o now and has no good control on his hands so he can’t write… neither could he stand. But I see him learn fast… so I’m desperate of looking for a school that could help him develop to his full potential. His “kuya” CJ, 9y/o have the same diagnosis. I plan to bring them both to the school if I find one. They have a little sister, Kim, 1.5y/o. She’s showing the same symptoms… so… yes, all my children are special except for the eldest, Cram-Ralph, now 13y/o. To anybody who could recommend a SPED school kindly send me message – dzhune@hotmail.com.. thank you very much

Hi, Janette!
It was a pleasure meeting you tonight. I connected with a lot of people who have at special needs relative or friend. The bloggers’ launch was more relaxed and personal in approach. I hope I didn’t freak you out. I used to hold back when I get messages from a Higher Perspective but I don’t anymore especially when they are positive messages.
My blog is Eclectic Journal at wordpress.com. And this is the piece I wrote which screams my heart out: http://eclecticjournal.wordpress.com/2008/02/07/child-of-mine/
As you have noticed about me, I don’t focus on the negatives of autism but rather the positive lessons I learn from being a mom of 2 boys in the spectrum. It’s a daunting thing to do as our society is more used to drama and controversy than good news but as you have noticed, I love speaking at how these boys teach me to appreciate and look at them with unconditional love everyday and every moment.
I will be doing a feature for ASP’s email newsletter on the launch and I forward you a copy when it gets published. Hope to see you soon!

I admire you for speaking up about this plight in the Philippines. Having taught in a SPED school, myself, I could see how lucky some children are for having families who could afford to send their children to good Special Education schools.
Although, I have actually come across a number of families that are just not as willing to send their children to school. They opt to keep their children at home or let their children help them at home instead.
Their reasons are their own…
You and your brother are lucky to have each other. I’m writing my thesis on SIBLINGS OF PEOPLE WITH ADHD. I only wish I could meet more siblings who are just as vocal for ADHD, as you are. Haha! I NEED to, as a matter of fact. Any one willing?
But I admire you even more for your perseverance in advocating the needs of special children, specially those with Autism.
Please keep up the wonderful work. We could all stand to learn from you and from each other.

I studied Special Education and I also had my direct experiences with special children.
They really need special attention.
As a teacher, I observed that in some public SPED schools here in Manila, only a few of them have a comprehensive curriculum for special children.

as a second year student studying SPED, i am aware of the issues regarding the quality of special education being provided here in the philippines and sad to say, the government does not have enough funds to provide proper education to these students. one of my professors even said that the government can only give 100php per student availing special education and that is very much alarming. the goal of SPED which is to make these people independent, functional and productive citizens of our society is hardly reachable. this is indeed a tragic reality.

My daughter, Gianna (now 7) was diagnosed with CP when she was only 1 year and 3 months old. She stopped schooling for a year now because she can no longer cope with the regular schooling.
Right now, my husband and I are desperate for finding a good SPED school near our area.
So far, all the schools that we have been visiting are about 1.5-2 hours away from home and I’m not sure if it would be worth it.
Appreciate is you can give me listing of SPED schools located in Pasig, Mandaluyong and Rizal area.

Hi I noticed a lot of responses had to do with finding a list of sped schools in the philippines.. I too have the same problem, and have been surfing the internet for possible schools to put my 12 yr old son who is dyslexic. I hope there is a good soul out there who would share their own experience and perhaps a list of a few schools that have a good SPED program for ADHD/Dyslexia children, and I might add not so expensive. In the range of P 40,000-P60,000 seems acceptable, considering SPED schools charge as high as P150,000. I know bec. I put my son in a school that addresses his dyslexia / LD problems and it costs this much. But now I need to transfer him. I found on the internet , St. Joseph’s College QC, who boasts of a good SPED program.. I am sure parents would appreciate feedback on whether their SPED program is indeed acceptable. So far this is the only one I found on the internet that actually talks about the SPED program in their school website. I hope someone shares their advice on schools with good SPED programs particularly for parents in the Philippines, who are the ones who really need support and help. Thanks. More power Mica you did a great job with this!

I studied MA in Special Education in UP Diliman but I request for absence of leave to explore my teaching career abroad for five years. My undergrad is BS Computer Science, then took up my Certificate of Professional Teaching then God put me in Special Education because I know He gave me a mission.
Only few people knows that these individuals with disability really needs Special Education. Before, I thought that they are nothing, but the moment I had a direct experiences with them…I would say that they are worth living in this world….love them… give special attention…and if just given a good education you would surprise that they are more skilled that comes out with them naturally.
I plan to continue my MA in SPED in UP second sem of this year because my advocacy is to put up a special school for those middle and low income family and God will provide and supply for this mission. God Bless!

hi, i have a 14 year old brother who was diagnosed with autism disorder. My mom and i are the ones who showed concern with my brother’s development, since my mom passed away last june 2007 i’ve decided to take care of my half-brother, because i’m afraid that now his father had a new wife, they might not understand his condition that’s why eventhough i just recently got married, i made an effort to take care of him together with my husband who is very supportive. I’m afraid for his future, i want him to be dependent and able to control his temper,so that he won’t hurt himself and others. It’s very heartbreaking when he does things like hurting himself when his frustrated on anything and not being able to express what he wants. Last school year he attended a special school and i can see his interest in going to school everyday. But this summer his just at home and i guess he gets bored thats why he always had tantrums. Now, we moved house from makati to San Mateo rizal and i’m desperately looking for a SPED school at San Mateo or the nearest place. Please if someone knows any, it’ll be a great help..Thanks..

i read mising carlo its the same with my child matthew. my problem about my kid hea is diagnose as an adhd child. my problem with him is that every year he had to transfer school from one place to another. in a short word every year he transfer s school due to his adhd but academically i had no problem about that . what bothers me is his behavior in school due to his adhd. right now i’m searching for a school for adhd children near here in quezon city. preferably a public school so i do not have to pay more for tuition fees for i can’t afford to place him in private school for adhd.

hi, I am a part owner of a special school and also a SPED teacher. i understand the financial difficulty of sending a special child in a private special school.
but you have to understand that usually it is more expensive to maintain a special school compared to a regular preschool, that’s facilities and educational materials wise. plus limited number of children/youth (the most is 5-6 high functioning)can be accomodated in a class.
for the therapy fee prob..there are HOME programs and HOME works provided by the therapist and teachers.the problem is that some families rely much to the therapist and us,teachers, that they are not giving enough effort to teach (apply the HOME prog & HOME work)their special children at home. the maximum time the school could provide is 2-4 hours.the special child’s learnings must be maximixed by continuous review and drill even at home.
What i’m driving at? if the parents desire to have a less expenses in the special child’s education they should give extra effort to educate their child even at home…that is to maximixe learnings with less hours and years of staying in therapies and special school.
or for those who doesn’t have the financial capacity to send a child in a special school, the family could help the child by providing him/her the teachings and trainings… there are seminars/training available everywhere for the family members.. i read one story of a mother who did the teaching and trainings for his daughter after the child stopped going to a SPED school for 4 years the child (w/ autism) was able to learn functional academics and Activities for daily living skills. she is now less dependent and functional (she knows counting money, buys small personal things she wants, etc.)
in some places here in the PHil. there are parents who grouped themselves formed a foundation then started a private SPED school. Those parents who has financial difficulty in sending their kids in school could do the same in their areas/place.you may seek help from your local politicians or philantropist or good hearted special teachers he he

hi i’m lorie a sped teacher; first i would like to commend all the parents, siblings, relatives and friends who really seek the best to cater the needs of these children. I must say its not a matter where and what institution you placed your child but its more on ACCEPTANCE and UNDERSTANDING of their condition, of their personality, with that we can make a BIG DIFFERENCE TO THE DEVELOPMENT of the child….Let us walk hand in hand in helping these kids to achieve their maximum potential and be part of this society. Let us treat them as normal human being. They need us and we need them because one thing i’ve learned from these kids they can love us without expecting anything in return…. i definitely salute these kids and i must say that we are blessed for sharing our lives with them….We are chosen by GOD to be their special parents, teachers, friends, lovers, relatives etc…..Let us continue to touch their lives!!!!!

I’m a student from UST taking up Beed major in Special education. I’m currently doing a study on the difference of Public and private sped schools and I’m deadened by the data i get. Its really sad, the level of speducation here in the country is just not enough to cater the needs of every individual. I sometimes feel envious of the Sped services in other countries especially in US and England. Darn, those are public schools…
July 1st, 2009 at 5:23 pm
i was searching about sped-related articles and end up reading yours.. happy to know that many of us are now aware of this problem in sped…that’s why i’m taking up SPED now to help these children..hoping to make a difference…^_^

Hi! I have an 8 year old son who was diagnosed with autism.
Just like most of you, our family too cannot afford the high cost of a good quality SPED school here in our country.
We tried to enroll my son on a Public SPED school, but to say, it’s not much of help to his situation. Since my son is high functional, there’s nothing for him to learn there because he already most of what they teach. The curriculum they offer does not fit to the individual learning need of each students.
Luckily we found a good tutorial center in Laguna. Though it is quite costly, it was worth it. But now that we moved to Manila, we are facing again the crisis of giving my son a good education.
I hope that this problem we will seriously dealt with by our government. or maybe an NGO can campaign for this advocacy.

hi! i’m a mother of two boys. a few months ago i had my eldest son (who is 5 years old now) checked by a developmental pedia and he was diagnosed to have mild autism. since then i have been religiously bringing him to his speech and occupational therapists and following all their suggestions.it helps alot for him although there’s not much of an improvement but i have high faith in him. recently his dev ped suggested to have him enrolled in a special school, i agree most special scholls are too costly. i’m basically single-handedly financing my son’s therapy and i don’t know how i will be able to send him to a special school.

Hello fellow learners. I totally agree with you, Cha. As we know, the government didn’t mind our future kids who needs our help. Thus, the least we can do is help ourselves.

Hi there. I have a 14 yr old autistic son, and we are currently base in Geneva Switzerland. My son is enrolled in public school for special children here in Geneva. However, i am not so happy with what they offer here. I would like to bring him back to Manila and attend special school that will focus on computer. I tried to research in the net, but couldnt find one. Hope that through this, someone may be able to help me. My son doesnt have speech, but he has been into computer lately. he spent hours in his computer going to You tube and exploring all philippine commercials/advertisements, power rangers and kids songs. All we do for him is to turn On the computer, enter the password and then he does the searching by himself. I find this as good development and I thought of exploring more on his interest.
Hoping someone can read this and refer me to the right person or school. Will be grateful to hear from anyone who can help. my email ad is lilyunas@yahoo.com.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi, my son was diagnose with ADHD a year ago. He was 7years old then. I tried to enroll him in a regular school to socialized with normal kid. I want him to learn even just to read and write his name.I want him to learn how to communicate and take care of himself. Im sickly and i want to make sure that he will be fine if ever im gone. I love my son so much that im willing to give everything just to secure his future. I work and save to support his theraphy and tutorials. But since sped fees and theraphy cost much i decided to bring him back to a regular school but he was always rejected. They get him misunderstood of being makulit. Im so disappointed and my heart is aching seeing him crying because he want to go to school. But his teacher doesnt want him to come. I hope your blog can reach the government so they will do something to help those who have special need. I know some country who support those people with special needs. Do we really need to migrate just to avail this previlage?A little help will do. We pay taxes but only few were benefited.

Hi i have a 5 yr old son who was diagnosed with Global evelopmental delay when he was 4 months old.. he under went on different test and trained by a PT when he was 1 yr old.. and now he was 5 yrs old I need to go back home here in the philippines to take care of my sons education, it is very hard to be a single parent. his dad left us when he knew he was like this and I became a battered wife for a year, so I decided to leave him alone. As of now my son currently studying on a private school here in our province which offeres SPED class, but unfortunately the two equirements for his therapy is not availbale here, we doesnt have occupational therapist and speech language therapist here in the province, as the developmental pedia advised we can ttransfer in Manila preferably in Quezon City bec. I am planning to buy a condo unit for both of us there.
I am always surfing thru the internet for a home base ot / speech therapy session so I can nurture my son alone as early as possible while waiting for the right therapy needed. He can talk but as of his age the developmental pedia only scored his ability overall for 18months old baby last October 2009.
Do you know any special School / Institution which offers OT and Speech language therapy at the same time..
Thanks and hope u can advised me..
Sincerely yours,
Miss. Garcia

good day to everyone… as i read your comments: i understand and know how it feels to have a special someone in the the family… at first,my mom just thought that my little sister was a late bloomer… she is 3 years younger than me. that time alam ko na hindi na normal ang relationship ko between my sis…i envy my childhood friends sila pwde nilang friend ang kapatid nila, but with me, i cant even share my secret with my sis. at times i hurt her, feeling guilty and regret the things that I’ve done to her…she was diagnosed with borderline autism. now i understands her situation thank mom, pinag tiyagaan niya talaga ang kapatid ko, assisting her in normal school… and now she is in college… its never to late for me to give my best to love her and to undertsand her… thank you for reading this… and sana maka tulong din ako sa iba… to better understand special angles sent to us… this is my email add: lovekogeri@yahoo.com

I am one of the parents of children with autism at Pag-ibig at Pag-asa school, San Pablo City. We are exploring the possibility of parents helping each other in extending the hours of teaching and forming our children at the school. We believe that our kids deserve the best attention. Instead of paying P1800 and up to a private school, we are designing a program that parents won’t pay any amount. However, The parents themselves will be the one’s doing the teaching, like academics, speech therapy, play therapy etc. Pls contact us if you stay near San Pablo City. my cell no. is 09106446784. email is cajudoorillaza@yahoo.com

Hi all, my nephew was recently diagnosed with autism. He is now 4 y.o. His parents live in Bulacan and sadly, I am having a hard time looking for public school there or nearby areas which offers special schooling for autistic children. Can anyone help me in the right direction? Thanks a lot.

Hi,
My name is Oliver from Malolos, Bulacan. I’m 29 years old, single. I have plenty of time to do something else. I am just wondering if i can do some volunteer work, like teaching sped or assisting a sped teacher in a class.
I only have few units in education (18 units) but willing to learn more in actual teaching by doing volunteer work. Is there anyone in this chat room have an idea where i can offer my time for such activity?
I can do volunteer work during weekends…
You may call me at my residence: 044-662-3109 or send me a text message to: 915-429-1876.
Thank you and God Bless us all!
Oliver.

I am looking for a school for him in Las Pinas City. Please advise via email for your suggestions. i am a bit desperate because i can’t find the best solution to my problem. I wish my son to be a boy at his age.

i am an elemtary teacher here in mangaldan, pangasinan, and i admire all of you who is geared towards developing your child’s potential for development, sad to say that our government cant provide the needs of these children at this time. even in the regular class, we lack competent teachers, instructional materials, classrooms, programs, etc.i hope that the govt will prioritze these needs.
